Hans Christian Knudsen. Born in Bergen, Norway, 18 March 1816, died Hatfjelddalen, Norway, after 26 May 1863. Joined the Rhenish Mission Society in 1836 after completing his training as artist and lithographer in Norway. Was sent to South Africa in 1841, and started work at Bethanie in 1842. He drew up the first legal code for the Hottentots of Bethanie, Berseba and Rehoboth. While on a visit to Norway, he married Elise Christiansen on 3 May 1848. They had two children. Having been banished from the Bethanie mission station by chief David Christian in 1849, he worked briefly in Tulbagh and other mission stations in the northern Cape  (1852-1854). In 1854, he laid down his ministry and returned to Norway, where he worked as an itinerant preacher until his death (Lau, 1985 : V1270, Tabler, 1972:64; Info; Faulenbach).
